Chelsea boots crease where the foot bends, and the close-fitting ankle makes an ordinary shoe tree awkward to get in and out. These trees are shaped for the job: a sprung split toe to work the creases out of the vamp, a slim oval heel block that sits inside the ankle, and a taller back so you can lift the tree out without a struggle. What you get

A pair of boot trees in raw, unstained cedar. The wood runs from deep pink to near white and may carry knots and streaks. The front is split and sprung, so it fills the toe box, and it can be adjusted a touch for width with a screwdriver. The arches are cut away so the tree slides in past the instep. Each heel block carries a gold-coloured knob and stands about 6 inches (15 cm) tall, not counting the knob.

To be clear: the taller heel is there for easy removal. It does not fill the boot above the ankle, and is not meant to. A short boot creases little through the shaft, so the work is done in the toe and across the vamp.

Why cedar

Leather takes on moisture every time you wear a boot. Cedar draws it out while the boots rest, so the leather dries evenly. The oils in the wood give a clean scent and deter moths. Put the trees in when you take the boots off and leave them in until the next wear. If the scent fades after a few years, a light rub with fine sandpaper brings it back. Choosing your size

Five sizes cover UK 5 to 12: EU 38/39 (UK 5–6), 40/41.5 (UK 6–7.5), 42/42.5 (UK 8–8.5), 43/44 (UK 9–10) and 45/46 (UK 11–12). If you are between sizes or unsure, go down. The spring provides the tension, so a slightly smaller tree still holds the boot without overstretching the heel or straining the stitching, whereas a tree that is too big will not go in at all. Add your initials

The top of each heel block can be engraved with initials or a short line of text in your choice of font. The area is small, about 30 mm wide, so keep it brief or split it over two lines. Engraved trees make a good present for anyone who has just bought a proper pair of boots. Engraving is permanent, so check the spelling before you order.
