Why Three Brushes?

Ask any professional shoe polisher how many brushes they use and the answer is never one. Dark polish residue left in the bristles of a single brush will streak and tint light-tan or cream leather within a few applications. The solution is simple: a dedicated brush for each colour family. That is precisely what this set provides — three real horsehair polishing brushes, ready to be assigned to dark, light, and neutral polishes from the moment they arrive.

The Case for Horsehair

Horsehair sits in the middle ground that shoe care demands: stiff enough to work polish into the welt, seams, and grain of the leather, yet soft enough not to lift or scratch the surface. Synthetic bristles, however inexpensive, lack the natural flexibility that allows horsehair to follow the contours of a shoe without dragging. Foam applicators over-load the leather with product and leave an uneven coat. Horsehair — dense, natural, and well-proven — distributes cream and wax polish evenly, ensuring the leather absorbs what it needs rather than sitting on the surface to smear.

High bristle density matters for exactly this reason. A sparse brush skips across the surface; a dense one makes proper contact and drives the polish into the leather's pores consistently across the full face of the shoe.

The Three-Brush Workflow

A structured approach to shoe care produces noticeably better results. Use the first brush to apply your cream or wax polish in short, circular strokes, working it thoroughly into the leather and around the welt. Allow a few minutes for the product to be absorbed. Use the second brush to buff away the excess in long, brisk strokes along the length of the shoe. The third brush — kept clean and dry — delivers the final buffing that brings up the shine. Each stage serves a distinct purpose, and keeping separate brushes for each means you are never reintroducing old product at the wrong moment.

For advice on compatible polishes, creams, and conditioning products to use with these brushes, see the full shoe care guide on the Cathcart Elliot website. We also stock shoe polish, conditioners, and cloths to complete your kit.

Care of Your Brushes

Horsehair brushes require minimal maintenance. After each session, knock the brush firmly against a folded cloth or piece of newspaper to dislodge loose polish. When a deeper clean is needed — every few months under normal use — wash the bristles with a small amount of washing-up liquid in lukewarm water, rinse thoroughly, and leave to dry flat, bristle-side down, away from direct heat. Never soak the handle, as prolonged water exposure can cause the wood to swell and the bristles to loosen over time.

Stored properly and kept to their designated colour family, a quality horsehair brush will last for many years of regular use — making this set one of the better-value additions to any shoe care routine.

OLD FASHIONED QUALITY

I've only used the brushes once - but they are better than the rather harsh bristled brush I've been using recently. They feel well made - and old fashioned in a good way. I don't think many people clean shoes anymore - but the few of us left, these are the brushes to use

Excellent quality product with dense bristles

The brushes are excellent and the engraving feature was useful, I was able to add - initials with 'polish on', 'polishing' & 'dubbin' - to identify the purpose for each brush . . . sadly there are teenagers who need this when parents are far away!
