More about this collection

Choosing overshoes, sole protection and weatherproofing

Not every wet-weather problem needs the same answer. Sometimes you need a physical barrier over the shoe, sometimes the sole needs treating, and sometimes a light protector spray is the more sensible choice. This collection brings those practical shoe-protection jobs together, without pretending one product can do absolutely everything.

Which shoe protector should you choose?

Choose rubber galoshes when you want a removable cover for dress shoes on short wet-weather journeys. They are designed for smarter shoes and are best used for commutes, the dash from car to office, or a quick walk across wet ground. They are not intended for chunky, heavy welted shoes or long country walks.

Choose leather sole waterproofing when the issue is the underside of a leather-soled shoe. It is applied after the shiny surface of the leather sole has worn off, helping the sole resist water and last longer. Choose a protector spray for uppers, bags or accessories where you want light weather protection without fitting anything over the shoe.

  • Choose galoshes for short wet-weather protection over dress shoes.
  • Choose leather sole tonic for worn leather soles that need water resistance.
  • Choose protector spray for leather, suede, nubuck, textile and accessories.
  • Choose pocket ice grips for snow and icy pavements, not for ordinary rain.
  • Check product sizing and suitability before ordering, especially for overshoes.

When overshoes make sense

Overshoes are useful when you want to wear smarter shoes but the weather has other ideas. They are a practical option for office shoes, formal shoes and travel, especially where changing shoes at the other end would be a nuisance. The key is to use them for short, sensible journeys rather than expecting them to behave like walking boots. British weather is ambitious; rubber galoshes should not have to be.

Overshoes and Shoe Protectors FAQ

Are galoshes suitable for all shoes?

No. The rubber galoshes in this collection are shaped for dress shoes. Chunkier or heavy welted shoes may not fit properly.

Can I use galoshes for long walks?

No. They are intended for short wet-weather journeys, such as commuting or moving between car, office and pavement.

When should I use leather sole waterproofing?

Use it on leather soles once the shiny surface has worn off. Apply to the worn sole and allow it to dry.

Are ice grips the same as overshoes?

No. Ice grips are for traction on ice and snow. Overshoes are for covering and protecting shoes from wet or dirty conditions.

Can protector spray be used on suede and nubuck?

Yes, choose a suitable protector spray and follow the product instructions. Always test carefully on delicate or pale materials first.
