A proper black Oxford, made for wider feet

Most formal Oxfords come in one width. If your feet are broad, that leaves two choices: put up with the pinch, or size up and walk about in shoes that are too long. The Sanders Oxford Wide gets rid of that choice. It is made on the 8M136R last in an H fitting, Sanders' extra-wide width, which the maker gives as the equivalent of a US EEEE.

Everything else is what a black cap-toe Oxford should be: a plain toe cap, closed lacing and black polishing leather that takes a high shine. Sanders lists it in its Uniform collection, alongside its parade and dress footwear.

Sanders & Sanders was founded in 1873 by the brothers William and Thomas Sanders in Rushden, Northamptonshire. The family still runs the business, and has made shoes in the same Spencer Road factory since 1912. Five generations on, it remains one of England's established shoemakers.

Built to be repaired

The Oxford Wide is Goodyear welted to a leather sole. Because the upper is stitched to a welt rather than glued to the sole, a good cobbler can take the worn sole off and stitch on a new one. Look after the uppers and the shoes will see several soles. Inside, a leather quarter lining sits round the heel and a linen lining runs through the vamp.

Sizing and fit

Take your usual UK size. Sanders does not give separate sizing advice for this model. The difference from a standard shoe is width, not length. If a standard F fitting already suits you, this pair will feel noticeably roomier. It is meant for feet that need it.

How to wear it

A black cap-toe Oxford is the right shoe for a navy or charcoal suit, formal business dress, black tie at a pinch, and anywhere a uniform calls for polished black shoes. The closed lacing keeps the line clean under tailored trousers.

Put cedar shoe trees in after each wear to hold the shape and draw out moisture. Brush off the dust with a horsehair brush, feed the leather with a black cream polish, and build the shine on the toe and heel with wax polish.
