The Rome belongs to the Diplomats collection — Sanders' most formal range — and it earns its place there in fine grade calf leather with a deep, burnished finish that improves, rather than diminishes, with age and attention.

The KEN Last: Fit and Construction

The Rome is built on the KEN last, a broad, rounded shape that accommodates the foot generously across the ball and toes. It carries an F (Standard) fitting — described by Sanders as their standard width — but the last is known to run larger than the standard suggests. Sanders themselves recommend sizing down by half from your usual UK size to achieve a close, comfortable fit. If you are between sizes or have a narrower foot, the half-size reduction is firmly advised.

Beneath the welt, the construction is Goodyear welted: a lockstitch runs through the upper, the welt, and the insole, binding all three into a structure that will outlast cemented alternatives many times over. When the leather sole eventually wears — and on a properly cared-for pair, that is a question of years rather than months — a cobbler can re-sole the shoe without compromising the upper. It is the construction that makes a shoe a long-term investment rather than a one-cycle purchase.

The Monk Strap: Formality Without Restriction

The single buckle monk strap sits comfortably between the formal closed-lacing of an Oxford and the ease of a loafer. It is adjustable at the buckle, which makes it practical for feet that fluctuate slightly through the day, and it introduces a restrained detail — the hardware — that prevents an otherwise plain shoe from disappearing entirely. In black French calf, the Rome reads as fully formal: appropriate for business suits, morning dress, and occasions where a plain Oxford would be equally at home. Pair it with mid-grey or navy suiting for maximum effect, or with dark denim and a blazer when the occasion calls for something a little less rigid.

Caring for the Rome

Finest calf rewards consistent attention. A quality black wax polish, applied with a horsehair brush and buffed to a shine, will maintain the finish and feed the leather against drying and cracking. After each wear, insert a pair of cedar shoe trees immediately — they absorb moisture from the lining, restore the last shape, and prevent the toe box from creasing prematurely. On a Goodyear welted shoe with full leather lining, this routine is the difference between a pair that looks good for a season and one that looks better at five years than it did on the day it arrived.
