Extended Description

The Orca Bay Ballena is one of those rare summer loafers that looks light and easy, but is built with a bit more thought than the average slip-on. In pale grey washable nubuck, it has the sort of soft, understated colour that works with almost anything, while the moccasin construction keeps the shoe flexible, neat on the foot and comfortable from the first proper outing. It is a useful shape too: relaxed enough for the coast, tidy enough for town, and far more practical than anything that needs babying.

The build is what makes it worth having. Ballena uses a hand-stitched moccasin upper with a full leather footbed and a lightweight sipe-cut rubber sole. That sole gives you proper underfoot grip without making the shoe feel heavy or clumpy, and the non-marking finish makes it well suited to deck use as well as everyday summer wear. In plain English, it is the sort of shoe you can wear for harbour walks, holiday packing, garden parties and long weekends without feeling either overdressed or under-shod.

For fit, treat it like a proper leather loafer rather than a trainer. Use the mm size guide on the product page and aim for a secure fit rather than anything loose at the heel. Ballena’s moccasin construction will relax a touch with wear, and one retailer’s fit note describes the style as coming up slightly neat, so the foot-length guide is the safest way to choose if you are between sizes.

The pale grey nubuck is especially easy to style. It sits happily with navy, white denim, stone chinos, summer dresses, linen trousers or cropped jeans, and it is softer and more forgiving than a bright white casual shoe. It gives you that clean warm-weather look without shouting about itself, which is usually the better sort of elegance anyway.

Care is straightforward. Brush the nubuck lightly now and then to keep the nap tidy, and if they need a fuller freshen-up, wash as directed and let them dry naturally away from direct heat. Once dry, a quick going-over with a nubuck brush helps revive the surface. For extra protection before wear, use a light coat of Collonil Organic Protect & Care 50ml. At home, a pair of ladies shoe trees will help keep the top and toe shape neat between wears.

Nubuck Shoe Care Guide: How to Clean & Protect Nubuck Leather

Nubuck shoes offer a premium, velvety finish that looks sophisticated but requires proper care to maintain their soft texture and colour. Unlike full-grain leather, nubuck is sanded to create a fine nap, making it more susceptible to dirt, stains, and moisture. Follow this step-by-step guide to keep your nubuck shoes in excellent condition.

1. Brush Off Surface Dirt & Dust

A nubuck brush is the best tool for keeping your shoes looking fresh. We recommend using a Carthcart Elliot Nubuck Brush, specially designed for delicate cleaning.

  • Start with the rubber side: Gently rub the surface in a circular motion to lift dirt and dust.
  • Use the bristle side for deeper cleaning: Lightly brush in the same direction as the nap to remove stubborn grime and restore texture.

Pair your nubuck brush with a set of cedar shoe trees to maintain the shape of your shoes.

2. Removing Stains from Nubuck

For Light Stains & Scuffs:

  • Use a nubuck rubber fingered eraser/brush (or a clean pencil eraser) to gently rub away small marks.
  • Avoid excessive pressure to prevent damage to the nap.

For Water Stains:

  • Dampen a clean microfiber cloth with a small amount of water and gently rub the entire shoe to prevent water spots.
  • Stuff the shoes with cedar shoe trees and allow them to air dry naturally (never use a radiator or direct heat).

For Oil or Grease Stains:

  • Sprinkle cornstarch or talcum powder over the stain and leave it overnight to absorb the grease.
  • The next day, brush the area gently with a nubuck brush.

A nubuck eraser and microfiber cloth are must-haves for a complete nubuck care kit.

3. Protect with a Nubuck Protector Spray

To keep your nubuck shoes looking their best and shield them from stains, use a nubuck protector spray:

  • Hold the spray about 20cm away and apply an even coat.
  • Allow to dry for a few hours before wearing.
  • Reapply every few weeks or after exposure to rain.

A nubuck protector spray is essential—combine it with a nubuck brush for the best long-term care.

4. Restoring & Maintaining the Nap

Over time, nubuck can appear flattened or shiny. To restore its soft, matte finish:

  • Brush with a nubuck brush to lift the nap after cleaning.
  • Steam your shoes lightly by holding them above a kettle or using a steam iron from a safe distance to soften the fibres, making them easier to restore.

Using a shoe horn prevents excessive creasing at the heel, helping to maintain the structure of your nubuck shoes.

5. Proper Storage & Long-Term Care

  • Store your nubuck shoes in a breathable cotton shoe bag to prevent dust buildup.
  • Keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Insert cedar wood shoe trees to absorb moisture and maintain their shape.

Cotton shoe bags and cedar shoe trees help prolong the life of nubuck shoes.
