Extended Description

The Orca Bay Fripp is one of those deck loafers that gets the balance right. It has the relaxed ease of a slip-on, but it is built with proper boat shoe know-how rather than fashion-shoe shortcuts. The canoe-cut apron, hand stitching and full moccasin construction give it the right nautical character, while the sand nubuck keeps the look lighter and softer than a darker pull-up leather. It is an easy choice for spring and summer, but it does not feel flimsy or throwaway.

What makes the Fripp work is the way the practical details have been handled. The upper uses premium oiled nubuck with the soft, brushed look that suits the colour well, and the full moccasin build helps the shoe flex naturally underfoot. A leather saddle adds structure across the vamp, while the cushioned EVA heel cup gives the step-in comfort buyers usually want from a slip-on. Underneath, the non-marking rubber sole is razor-cut for grip, so it is suitable for wet pontoons, polished marina surfaces and everyday pavement wear alike. Rustproof eyelets and salt-resistant leather details are there for good reason too; this is a deck shoe made with real coastal use in mind.

Fit is the question most customers want answered. The Fripp is a true slip-on, so there is less adjustment than you get with a laced deck shoe. Most feedback points to sizing being straightforward, but some broader-footed buyers have found it a little neat across the forepart. The safest approach is to measure your foot length in mm and use the size guide on the page rather than assuming your usual UK size from another brand.

For wearing, the Fripp is at home with chinos, shorts, cotton trousers and unstructured summer tailoring. The sand shade works especially well with navy, stone, olive, faded denim and striped shirting. For care, treat the nubuck before first wear and brush it regularly to keep the nap looking clean. A Cathcart Elliot nubuck brush, protector spray and a pair of men’s shoe trees will help the Fripp hold its shape and stay looking smart between wears.

Care guide

Nubuck Shoe Care Guide: How to Clean & Protect Nubuck Leather

Nubuck shoes offer a premium, velvety finish that looks sophisticated but requires proper care to maintain their soft texture and colour. Unlike full-grain leather, nubuck is sanded to create a fine nap, making it more susceptible to dirt, stains, and moisture. Follow this step-by-step guide to keep your nubuck shoes in excellent condition.

1. Brush Off Surface Dirt & Dust

A nubuck brush is the best tool for keeping your shoes looking fresh. We recommend using a Carthcart Elliot Nubuck Brush, specially designed for delicate cleaning.

  • Start with the rubber side: Gently rub the surface in a circular motion to lift dirt and dust.
  • Use the bristle side for deeper cleaning: Lightly brush in the same direction as the nap to remove stubborn grime and restore texture.

Pair your nubuck brush with a set of cedar shoe trees to maintain the shape of your shoes.

2. Removing Stains from Nubuck

For Light Stains & Scuffs:

  • Use a nubuck rubber fingered eraser/brush (or a clean pencil eraser) to gently rub away small marks.
  • Avoid excessive pressure to prevent damage to the nap.

For Water Stains:

  • Dampen a clean microfiber cloth with a small amount of water and gently rub the entire shoe to prevent water spots.
  • Stuff the shoes with cedar shoe trees and allow them to air dry naturally (never use a radiator or direct heat).

For Oil or Grease Stains:

  • Sprinkle cornstarch or talcum powder over the stain and leave it overnight to absorb the grease.
  • The next day, brush the area gently with a nubuck brush.

A nubuck eraser and microfiber cloth are must-haves for a complete nubuck care kit.

3. Protect with a Nubuck Protector Spray

To keep your nubuck shoes looking their best and shield them from stains, use a nubuck protector spray:

  • Hold the spray about 20cm away and apply an even coat.
  • Allow to dry for a few hours before wearing.
  • Reapply every few weeks or after exposure to rain.

A nubuck protector spray is essential—combine it with a nubuck brush for the best long-term care.

4. Restoring & Maintaining the Nap

Over time, nubuck can appear flattened or shiny. To restore its soft, matte finish:

  • Brush with a nubuck brush to lift the nap after cleaning.
  • Steam your shoes lightly by holding them above a kettle or using a steam iron from a safe distance to soften the fibres, making them easier to restore.

Using a shoe horn prevents excessive creasing at the heel, helping to maintain the structure of your nubuck shoes.

5. Proper Storage & Long-Term Care

  • Store your nubuck shoes in a breathable cotton shoe bag to prevent dust buildup.
  • Keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Insert cedar wood shoe trees to absorb moisture and maintain their shape.

Cotton shoe bags and cedar shoe trees help prolong the life of nubuck shoes.

We recommend using our foot measure to accurately measure your feet. Note:
The internal shoe size is between 5mm and 10mm longer than your foot length in mm
NOTE: EU sizes do NOT correspond directly to UK sizes
Additionally different manufacturers use different sizing scales, different lasts (height and width) and different toe gaps.
