A good shoe brush is one of the quiet workhorses of a proper care kit. This Cathcart Elliot shoe polishing brush is sized for everyday use, with dense horsehair bristles and a 15cm wooden handle that sits neatly in the hand. It is the sort of brush you reach for before the polish tin comes out and again when the leather is ready for its final buff.
The reason horsehair remains the standard is simple: it is soft enough to treat smooth leather with respect, yet lively enough to lift surface dust, clear away dried polish haze and bring up a clean, even shine. Run it over the vamp, quarters, heel counter and around the welt before polishing to remove grit, then use it again once your cream or wax has settled. A few brisk passes will even out the finish and wake the shine back up without harsh scratching.
The 15cm format is especially useful because it gives better control than an oversized bench brush. It is easy to work around the toe, along the facing and into the edges where dust gathers near the welt. That makes it a practical choice for town shoes, office pairs, loafers and polished boots alike. Keep it by the shoe rack for daily dusting, or add it to a fuller care kit with polish, daubers and a duster.
If you have used cheaper brushes in the past, the common complaint is usually that they are too coarse or better at scrubbing than buffing. That is not what a proper horsehair polishing brush is for. Use this one on smooth leather for regular brushing and finishing. For caked mud or heavy grime, clean first with the right cleaner or a firmer brush. For suede and nubuck nap, use a dedicated suede brush instead.
One final practical point: if you rotate between black, brown and lighter polishes, it is sensible to keep a separate buffing brush for darker colours. It keeps the finish cleaner and avoids carrying old pigment from one pair to the next. For anyone who values tidy uppers, clean welts and a sharper shine with very little effort, this is an easy piece of kit to keep close to hand.
