5th Anniversary Wood Gift Ideas — Personalised & Engraved Presents
Share
The fifth wedding anniversary has been associated with wood since at least the Victorian era, when a list of traditional anniversary gifts was first popularised in the English-speaking world. Wood was chosen, so the explanation goes, because it symbolises the qualities a five-year marriage has begun to develop: strength, depth, and roots that are starting to hold.
Whether or not you find the symbolism compelling, the practical appeal of wood as a gift material is clear enough. It is warm, tactile, durable, and — crucially — it takes personalisation exceptionally well. An engraved name, a date, an inside reference that means something to exactly two people: wood carries these things with a permanence that card or digital gestures cannot match.
We make personalised wooden gifts in-house, using a laser engraver to cut names, initials, dates, and images into cedar wood and other hardwoods with a precision that hand-carving cannot reliably achieve. What follows is a practical guide to the options, with some honest thoughts on what makes a wood anniversary gift worth giving.
A note on quality: engraving varies enormously. Laser engraving cuts into the wood itself — it is permanent and does not fade. Be cautious of printed or adhesive 'engraving' which looks similar initially but wears off with handling.
What Makes a Good Wood Anniversary Gift?
The best wood anniversary gifts share a few characteristics. They are made from real wood rather than MDF or composite board with a wood-effect finish. They are personalised in a way that is specific to the couple — not a generic 'Mr & Mrs' template, but something that reflects an actual detail of their life together. And they are useful or displayable enough that they will be kept, not put in a drawer and forgotten by the following spring.
A wooden coaster with a couple's initials that sits on the coffee table every day is, in this respect, more successful than an elaborate engraved plaque that gets leaned against the wall in the spare room. Sentiment and practicality are not opposites.
Gift Ideas for Him
Personalised Cedar Shoe Trees
For the man who owns shoes he genuinely cares about — and there are more of them than the gift-buying industry tends to acknowledge — personalised cedar shoe trees are a considered and slightly unexpected gift. The cedar is engraved with his initials or name; the trees go into his best shoes and stay there for years.
There is something appropriate about the material. Cedar is one of the traditional hardwoods, used in shoe trees precisely because it is stable, aromatic, and long-lasting. A pair of engraved cedar shoe trees for a fifth anniversary is, in its way, rather literal — and none the worse for that.
Personalised Wooden Fly Box
For the angler, a personalised wooden fly box — laser-engraved with a name, initials, or a short dedication — is a gift that will be used on every fishing trip for years. Our cedar salmon and trout fly boxes are made to hold flies securely and take personalisation across the lid. A gift that spends time in a fishing bag develops its own character; that is rather the point.
Engraved Wooden Coasters
A set of engraved wooden drinks coasters is one of the more reliably useful wooden gifts available. They sit on a table and are seen every day. Personalised with a couple's name, a date, a monogram, or a small illustration, they acquire an easy familiarity that makes them feel like part of the home rather than a gift that has been given a home.
Gift Ideas for Her
Cedar Wood Shoe Stretcher
For the woman who has shoes she loves but that require a degree of persuasion to wear comfortably, a two-way cedar wood shoe stretcher is quietly brilliant. It adjusts both length and width, includes bunion buttons for targeted relief, and is made from aromatic cedar rather than the usual hard plastic. It is not the most obviously romantic gift, but it will be used, and that counts for more than most people admit when shopping.
Ladies' Cedar Shoe Trees
As with the men's version: for the woman who owns leather shoes worth preserving, cedar shoe trees are a genuinely useful gift with a material that fits the occasion. Our ladies' cedar shoe trees are sized for women's UK sizing and shaped to suit the broader range of toe shapes found in women's footwear.
Personalised Wooden Gift Box
A hardwood gift box, laser-engraved with a name, initials, or a meaningful date, functions as both gift and wrapping. The recipient keeps the box — for jewellery, photos, keepsakes, or simply because it is handsome — long after the contents have been enjoyed. Available in various sizes through our wooden gift box range.
Gifts for the Couple
Personalised Coaster Set
A matching set of engraved bottle coasters, personalised with the couple's surname or wedding date, is one of those gifts that integrates quietly into a household and stays there. Practical enough to be used daily, personal enough to mean something.
Engraved Wooden Serving Board or Cheese Board
A hardwood serving board with the couple's name or initials engraved across the surface is a gift that earns its place at every gathering. The engraving deepens with use as the wood develops its character. Contact us for bespoke board enquiries beyond our standard range.
What Can Be Personalised?
Our laser engraver can work with most wooden surfaces. Standard personalisation options include names, initials, dates, short messages, family crests, company logos, and simple illustrations. The engraving is permanent — it will not fade, peel, or wear off with handling.
For items we currently carry in our personalised range, engraving is included in the product price or added for a small fee. For bespoke commissions or bulk orders — for example, matching gifts for a wedding party — contact us directly and we will discuss what is possible.
Ordering in Time
Personalised items take slightly longer to produce than standard products, as each piece is engraved individually after the order is placed. Allow a minimum of 2 working days for standard orders. Remember shipping is anything from 1-5 days depending on the service chosen. For bespoke commissions or during busy periods such as Christmas, allow longer and contact us if you have a fixed deadline — we will always be straightforward about what is achievable.
If you are unsure which gift to choose, or want to discuss something specific to your situation, contact us. We have been making personalised wooden gifts for a long time. We are unlikely to be short of ideas.
